Artist's Selfie

Artist's Selfie

Inspired by a lesson from https://portraitsbreadth.wordpress.com

Thank you!  Ms. Carrie King, high school art teacher at Mt. Eden High School in Hayward, CA

GOAL: Create a self-portrait in the style of a "selfie"

PROCEDURE:

1. Make a list of things that are important to you.

2. Make a list of background elements (see #2 under Drawing Requirements) that you like.

3. Set up a mirror so that you can see yourself as you draw.

4. You can include the edge of the mirror in the drawing, as well as your drawing board, pencil in your hand.

5. "Make a face" as you draw so that it is EXPRESSIVE and not static (i.e. boring!)

DRAWING REQUIREMENTS:

1. Draw out 4-5 thumbnail sketches of how you want to create your own selfie.  Make sure all of them are different.

     a. Must be from the chest up with the face being the focal point with an emphasis on expression

2. The completed selfie must have a background.  Fill the area around the head/body with something that enhances the portrait.  Incorporate your likes from the list you generated.  Examples of backgrounds could be:

     a. texture (wood grain, marble, etc.)

     b. patterns (zentangles)

     c. symbols (birds, insects, etc.)

     d. architectural elements (doorway, bridge, windows, etc.)

3. Size: Minimum 9"x12", Maximum 11"x14" with 1/2" border

4. Medium of your choice

5. Can be black and white or in color

Work to be handed-in:

1. Lists of your likes and the background details

2. 4-5 thumbnails

3. Final art for Artist's Selfie, size between 9x12 and 11x14 with a 1/2" border

Questions to ask yourself:

What conditions, attitudes, and behaviors support creativity and innovative thinking?

Why do people value artworks and select them for presentation?

How do images influence our views of the world?

How do people contribute to awareness and understanding of their lives and the lives of their communities through art-making?
